Is she a robot?

Here’s a really funny story from today. I was doing a test call with a school for Michigan Exchange, and one of the students in the library said, “Is she a robot?” He’d never seen a videoconference before! It’s pretty funny to think what kids expect. It’s the second time I’ve gotten that type of question from a student. The other time was, “Are you a computer program?” Chuckles. Ah, we have to educate these kids about videoconferencing!!

  1. Funny. I occasionally have had similar experiences when we do our pre-show sound/connectivity checks. We usually have a marquee or title slide up that says we are connected and standing by. But the kids naturally monkey around in front of the camera at these times. I’ve unintentionally startled some of them when I let them know we could see and hear them.

  2. That’s great! We connected Kindergartners with Philadelphia Museum of Art for an activity titled ‘Impressionist Art’. The last question from a little boy to our presenter (after nearly an hour long event AND this class’ third vc connection this year), “Are you real?”

Their first two connections were class-to-class for Read Around the Planet. I guess kids at the far site are more believeable than grownups! Go figure! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Two more great stories Amy & Jason! Thanks for sharing! I guess while we are orienting kids to VC, we need to help them understand the the person at the other side is a real person. LOL. ๐Ÿ™‚
