What's Up with Upgrades?

It seems like this is the third year in a row that sometime in March we have really weird H.261/263/264 dialing conflicts. We upgrade software, and all of a sudden bridges are crashing, sites just ring & ring and won’t negotiate, and one site can take down the whole conference. Is it just me or is this happening to you too?

When you do a lot of connections with multiple vendors’ units involved in the call, once in a while you get caught in between upgrades. The upgrade of one vendor breaks the connections with another vendor and they haven’t fixed it in their latest version yet. Has this happened to you?

It seems like it’s never a good idea to upgrade anything in the middle of the school year. However, sometimes we want to upgrade to fix a problem. It seems like a no-win situation.

That’s my rant for today! 🙂 Do you have any words of wisdom? Please comment!

  1. Thanks for the help on Friday with my video conferences! We got the full version in for the other two classes. The connection still kept dropping about every six minutes or so, but we were always able to connect back. I had one student start timing how long we stayed connected each time. lol

  2. I’m not a network person, but with the connection dropping consistently after a certain period of time it almost sounds like a gatekeeper issue. Could that be it? Was there a gatekeeper to which Jenni would have needed to register her unit?

  3. Ken, now that I have the data that it’s consistent, we can have the techs in the district look at the network. Usually it’s a router or switch that thinks the connection isn’t still going and so it drops it. There’s a different kind of communication that happens after the call is up and running and some network devices don’t recognize it as a live connection. (At least that’s my limited understanding of how it works.) Anyway now we have the data to look into it further….
