ASK: The Wall

may22am.jpgToday we are doing our first day of ASK sessions on the book The Wall. Middle school students are interviewing a panel of our local Vietnam veterans. Here is a sampling of their questions from today.

  • How did you adjust to the different climate and culture in Vietnam?
  • What was a typical day like for you?
  • What encouraged you to be in the military?
  • What did you excel in?
  • Would you rather fight in Iraq today or back then in Vietnam?
  • How and where did you sleep when you were in battle?
  • What did you eat while you were there?

Some of the classes started their questions with, “Thank you for your service to our country. My question is….” The panel of veterans very much appreciated this little gesture from the students. You should have seen them beam as students started asking their questions. Even at lunch they were still talking about those respectful, well-prepared students!

  1. Here is a note from the teacher of the 8th grade class at H.G. Isbill Jr. High…quality learning at the end of school after testing is finished!

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to participate. We did a webquest on Viet Nam in the fall, then read a story about post traumatic war syndrome, so it was neat to do follow up even if it was several months later. They also enjoyed the book, THE WALL. Then our librarian found us a movie about the entire process of building the memorial wall, so my students got some rather sophisticated learning done the last 3 weeks of school—which worked for me!!!
My other classes wished they could have been part of this project.
    Thanks again,

  2. I agree completely with Sandy’s post. Even though our students were younger than hers, we have had such a quality learning experience about…the geography, history, making connections to literature, speaking with experts on the subject. We’ve been pretty emotional a few times as we discussed “The Wall”, especially the artifacts that have been left there. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end our school year! I’m interested in the movie about the building of the wall. Can I have more info?
