MysteryQuest Teacher Story

I’m cleaning up my MysteryQuest World site (to meet the new standard), and so I need to archive these on another site. Here they are for your enjoyment!

I did Mystery Quest last year, with the idea that risk taking is good, and found it a fabulous experience. Besides being on the forefront of technology, having this live experience really did sharpen my students’ motivation and performance through the whole process. I put the responsibility on them – my job was to keep the project manageable and the kids relaxed – but they really did much of the work – with more effort and resolve than they usually put forth. Plus we had a good time and felt pretty special.

Know that we are all in it together – and there is no real pressure the day of the videoconference. Everyone will be understanding and supportive. It is not a competition – just a cool event. There were people with whom I couldn’t do this without. Janine, of course, was supportive the whole way through – and will go above and beyond, to make you comfortable. We had to bus to our local ISD and the tech guy there was incredible. He had me out beforehand and showed me just what would happen, made fantastic suggestions to make my job easier, and then ran the show, from the tech side, during the conference. The tech person should be able to give you specific guidelines too – depending on the set up and equipment available. I couldn’t have handled that and the class too – so check out how your end of the video conference will go. You need to have confidence that part is handled. (Oh there were glitches, but we dealt with them – and it was a big thing that they weren’t MY responsibility. 🙂

I have 2 groups for 2 classes (World Geography / Math) and I took each class on separate days. Each did it’s own country, which kept things interesting and we came up with a different ‘plot device’ for each one too. One class we did a ‘jeopardy game’ format, and the other a skit where a group of explorers crashed on the shore, not knowing where they were – they went on to ask questions of the people they met. I jazzed this one up by showing a video clip from unitedstreaming.com of a sailing ship going around Cape Horn – but that was just silly fun. Someone suggested we could have done jeopardy with a Powerpoint set up – but I just juggled 30 sheets of papers with the questions -and that many sheets for the answers, and placed them under a document camera (which the tech guy showed me :). For 4 classes you might want to keep things simpler though – come up with a format to use for each class – though a different country so YOU won’t get bored. Each class would present to a different group of kids, so THAT doesn’t matter.

We spent about a week, divided up into groups of 4-5 doing research on sample countries – to get a feel for the questions and answers, and the resources and web links we had. This also helped during the research time during the video conference as we knew where to look for different kinds of clues. Then a week researching and setting up the presentation for our chosen country. We wish we had twice as much time, but again, nothing gets stale and kids know they have to use every minute wisely.

I felt this was a great project at the beginning of the year to introduce students to resources they’ll use a lot during the year – encyclopedias, almanacs, and various web sites.

And if you are worried you don’t have enough time to participate, join the club – we all feel that way – but we’ll manage it the best we can. I think maybe what’s most important is to guage your class. Sell it well, but then ask them if THEY want to do it, explaining carefully that it means no free rides, and every single person will be on camera and has to do their share.

Standardizing Project Web Formats

I’m enjoying the discussion on project work flow. I thought it would be helpful to continue by thinking about what should be standard in a project page. I’m working from Roxanne’s Monster Match; Lori’s Black History Month, and one of my MysteryQuest projects.

Critical Components for All Projects

  • Description: a three-four sentence blurb/ad
  • Agenda: sample agenda for the VC
  • Registration: and/or instructions for registration
  • What else?

Essential for Some Projects

  • Preparation information / teacher materials
  • Examples (pictures/movie)
  • FAQ (Roxanne how do you think of the questions to put in the FAQ?!)
  • Timeline
  • What else?

Registration Method Choices

  • A wiki for self-registration (see examples here and here)
  • A google form for the coordinator to make the schedule
  • What else?

I’m seriously thinking of moving my project websites to wikis. The question is: one wiki per project? or one wiki with all the projects? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

While thinking about this, I had another brainstorm. What if we had a “project wiki ring”? Remember the old web ring from the early days of the Internet? Each of our projects linked to one other on the ring and a teacher/VC coordinator could cycle through them. Too old-Internet-fashioned?

Project Work Flow

August is my planning and technical month. I’ve been upgrading endpoints and infrastructure, testing new units, etc. I’m also working on streamlining my work flow in running collaborative projects for me schools. I’ve been inspired by Roxanne’s summer thinking on her digital workflow. So with that in mind, I’ve made myself a monster spreadsheet with columns for each project (in GoogleDocs of course), and the tasks on the left. Now I can color and check off tasks to my heart’s content! I can also jot notes to fix aspects of a project right in the appropriate cell. I can also see at a glance how it’s going.

Just as a reminder of the projects I run, here is a sample of the projects that are included in my monster spreadsheet. Some of them I collaborate with others, some are organized by other people, some of them I run on my own.

Preparation Tasks

  • Set dates

My thought is that if I can make my process more consistent across the board, and do most of the prep before school starts, I’ll be able to scale my projects as the demand continues to increase in my districts.

I also have this tendency while running projects to write down random thoughts to fix something, and then the notes are scattered all over the place. Hopefully with this spreadsheet, I can write website fixes in the website cell, etc.

Some Updates: Projects Booklet & Survey Results

Just a quick little update for those of you following and using my resources.

Videoconference Project Templates Booklet 4th Edition

The 2009 version of the “projects booklet” is online as of today. I was all excited to add more templates based on my Marzano study, but I ran into a 40 page limit on booklets in Word. So now I’m thinking about some other options for publishing, and Lulu is looking good (suggested by Danny Maas!). Between Roxanne, Arnie and I, we have a lot more tips and information and lesson ideas that could be published. Lulu seems good because we could keep the cost low. If you have any thoughts on this idea, please comment!

Teachers’ Choice Content Provider Survey

We have received all the votes for this year’s content provider survey and are tallying the results to share online. They should be up online and shared on the listservs the first week of June. Thank you to over 500 people who voted!

Types of Interaction

I’m still thinking about the next version of the projects booklet for this summer’s workshops. I’m thinking about types of interaction. What kinds can you think of? Here’s what I have so far:

  1. Presentation followed by Q&A. The basic exchange used in MI Week Exchange (the original exchange started in 1997), Read Around the Planet (which was based on MI Week Exchange), etc.
  2. Participation in each other’s presentations. This includes the snow ball fights, doing the actions along with the presenting class etc.
  3. Interacting with the other class’ content. Game shows, quiz shows, any academic challenges.  Data collection projects. Role playing, mock trials, etc.
  4. Using the other class’ presented information to do something with it. MysteryQuest, Texas History Mystery, etc.
  5. Hands-on interaction. Gadget Works from COSI Columbus, and making puppets at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
  6. Bringing created objects to share and interact with. Monster Match, sharing worm farms, growing gardens, design projects.
  7. Dialogue, discussion, debate. True spontaneous conversations. Usually on hot topics: GNG’s discussions of hot topics, and MAGPI’s issue discussions.

Can you think of any other types of interaction? What am I missing?

Marzano: Nonlinguistic Representation

Nonlinguistic Representation: Generalizations

  1. A variety of activities produce nonlinguistic representation.
  2. The purpose of nonlinguistic representation is to elaborate on knowledge.

Recommendations

Use these to improve your practice.

  1. Use graphic organizers to represent knowledge.
  2. Have students create physical models of the knowledge.
  3. Have students generate mental pictures of the knowledge they are learning.
  4. Use pictures or pictographs to represent knowledge.
  5. Have students engage in kinesthetic activities representing the knowledge (Pitler, et al., 2007, p. 86-87).

Brainstorming for Videoconferencing

This is the fun strategy, because it fits most easily with a visual communication medium. It also fits a progression of levels of interaction.

  • Share student nonlinguistic representations of data. We tried this out for the first time this school year with the TWICE We the Kids project. Students share drawings or skits representing the phrases of the constitution preamble. So classes can share/present to each other: graphic organizers, physical models, pictures, pictographs, and kinesthetic activities such as dance (watch the video on irregular verbs) and many more listed here such as acting out the states of matter.   • Mystery-Motions! What if kids could act out different concepts and the other class tried to guess? i.e. the states of matter. Weather patterns. Obviously the classes would need shared vocabulary and knowledge. Wouldn’t this be a great activity in a language exchange?
  • Creating Nonlinguistic Representations Together. How could the classes create a non-linguistic representation together? We already talked about creating online before the videoconference. But what about during the VC? Could the classes take a survey and make a pictograph by lining up for favorite pets – and easily see each other’s graphs right away? This would certainly add a new twist to the traditional Q&A at the end of a classroom collaboration.

More Sharing Ideas

  • Graphs & Data. A good chunk of the technology book is spent on graphing data, collecting it with probes, digital microscopes, etc. The current projects booklet has a data collection idea, but I have rarely seen it used. Do we just not collect and process data very often in schools?
  • Creating Videos. Having students create a video of their knowledge is also a nonlinguistic representation. @roxanneglaser has modeled this for us with Texas Twisted Weather and Imagine It!.
  • Sharing Animations. Students could create and share animations with their partner class. Reminds me of Animationish, Sketchy and Frames. Are your students creating these? Why not share them and inspire another class?

Beyond Just Sharing
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut of presenting/sharing what has been done in class. How else can we interact with the partner class?

  • Ask the other class to draw something in response to what you taught/shared with them.
  • Ask the other class to move in response to your class movements.
  • Ask the other class to do a simple movement (stand up, clap) as you quiz them. Try to make the movements represent the knowledge. @sparky1fan, surely you have a good idea or two here!

Marzano: Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers

Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers: Generalizations

  1. Cues, questions, and advance organizers should focus on what is important rather than what is unusual.
  2. “Higher-level” questions and advance organizers produce deeper learning than “lower-level” questions and advance organizers.
  3. Advance organizers are most useful with information that is not well organized.
  4. Different types of advance organizers produce different results.
  5. Waiting briefly before accepting responses from students has the effect of increasing the depth of students’ answers.
  6. Questions are effective learning tools even when asked before a learning experience.

Recommendations

Use these to improve your practice.

  1. Use expository advance organizers.
  2. Use narrative advance organizers.
  3. Teach students skimming as a form of advance organizer.
  4. Teach students how to use graphic advance organizers.
  5. Use explicit cues.
  6. Ask questions that elicit inferences.
  7. Ask analytic questions (Pitler, et al., 2007, p. 74).

Brainstorming for Videoconferencing

Cues, Questions and Advanced Organizers are primarily again about accessing prior knowledge. Cues and questions help students see what’s coming next so they can begin connecting it to their current knowledge. These are asked by the teacher. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about getting student questions to a higher level quality (in ASK & other programs). But that is not what the research on cues & questions is about.

Cues and questions can be used by content providers during the program, and by teachers before & after a program or project. The questions & cues need to tie into the main point of what’s important in the unit.

Cues & Questions Before a VC

  • Giving students an overview of the important content in the upcoming lesson.
  • Using wait time (double the wait time in a VC) to give time for quality answers.
  • Asking higher level questions. I can think of providers who do this well, and others who ask questions that elicit only one-word answers. The Handbook has a nice list of examples of generic inferential questions that can be adapted to your content (p. 270-271).

Possible New Format

Another section is about Analytic Questions. These are questions that analyze errors, construct support, and analyze perspectives. I’m thinking of Eco-Conversations and similar projects that address current issues. What if both classes attempted to answer questions such as:

  • What are the errors in reasoning in this information?
  • How is this information misleading?
  • What is an argument that would support the following claim?
  • Why would someone consider this to be good (or bad or neutral)?
  • What is the reasoning behind his or her perspective?
  • What is an alternative perspective, and what is the reasoning behind it? (Marzano, 2001, CITW, p. 116)

Share Advance Organizers?

I think it would be so interesting and beneficial for students to share their own advance organizers on a topic, but could they be made clearly enough that the other class could read them?

Or what if two classes worked together to create an advance organizer on a topic. It could be created in GoogleDocs as a spreadsheet or table, or an artistic advance organizer in an online collaborative brainstorming or drawing too. Imagine classes with interactive white boards working on the document as a class, and then sharing to see what the other class adds to it. During the videoconference they could discuss the topic or present new information to each other and then add more new knowledge to their organizer.

Marzano: Providing Recognition

Providing Recognition: Generalizations

  1. Rewards do not necessarily have a negative effect on intrinsic motivation.
  2. Reward is most effective when it is contingent on the attainment of some standard of performance.
  3. Abstract symbolic recognition (e.g., praise) is more effective than tangible rewards (e.g., candy, money).

Recommendations

Use these to improve your practice.

  1. Personalize recognition.
  2. Use the Pause, Prompt, and Praise strategy.
  3. Use concrete symbols of recognition (Pitler, et al., 2007, p. 59-60).

Brainstorming for Videoconferencing

Most of the ideas in this area are on giving students certificates (printed and online), posting exemplary work online, using response systems to give recognition, and giving students recorded audio messages.

Interestingly, videoconferencing is included again as a way to have students communicate with professionals and peers as authentic audiences. The Global WRITeS project was featured as a way for students to perform and judge poetry. I’ve blogged about this project when it was presented at NECC last year. Andrea Israeli blogs about this project too. Students receive both authentic feedback from the poet and peers, as well as getting recognition for work well done.

Other ways that students receive recognition in current programs we do are:

  • Students hearing their names in a videoconference. When the author or expert listens to a student question and then uses their name back, students LOVE it!
  • Complimenting classes. When the facilitator in a project such as MysteryQuest or Monster Match congratulates the class on their monster match or their good note-taking, classes receive recognition.
  • Can you think of any others?

New Ideas

  • Performance Judging. This idea of having students perform and then be judged (using agreed upon criterion) can be used beyond poetry. What else? Dance, music, and speech. How about student created videos on multiple topics, as organized so efficiently by @roxanneglaser with Texas Twisted Weather and Imagine It!
  • Goal sharing. What if students could share, say towards the end of the year, some of their goals and how they accomplished them? Could sharing with another class (authentic audience) how they achieved the goal provide recognition? They could be motivated and inspired by the other class too. Is that too crazy of an idea? What do you think?
